Telehealth is sanctioned by AOTA as an option for service delivery, including both assessment and intervention. This intervention method can provide mandated services to students who have them listed on their IEP or Service Agreement. Occupational therapists do not receive training in this type of service delivery model in their pre-service training. This course will explain the process of setting up a professional telehealth practice using a web-based platform. Evidence from the literature and AOTA resources will serve as the foundation for the content. In order to complete the certification, therapists will need to demonstrate competence in managing the software and conducting an evidence-based intervention session.

Joe Comeau
Joseph Comeau, M.S.ED, CCC-SLP, entered the fascinating realm of telepractice in 2015 when he was given one week to organize and implement a telepractice program for a school caseload consisting of 56 students. Much has changed and developed since then, and Joseph now manages, trains, supports and motivates other tech-savvy clinicians working with the EBS Telepractice team. A Master of Science degree in Education with a Certificate of Clinical Competence makes Joe a teacher and trainer who lives for the thrill of seeing the “wow” moment when his students see the light.

Cynthia Haynes
Cynthia Haynes, MBA, OTD, OTR/L, is the Director of Occupational Therapy Services far EBS Healthcare where she oversees therapist mentoring, retention and designs trainings far continued competence and best practice strategies for school-based therapists. She is also an adjunct professor in the OTD program at Thomas Jefferson University. She has authored peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and presents regularly at the local and national level. She is a regional trainer for the AOTA sponsored Fieldwork Educator Certificate Program and contributed to the development of one training module.

Learner Objectives

By completing this course, each learner will develop and strengthen their ability to:

  • Acquire confidence using web-conferencing tools {software?} to present, manipulate and synthesize learning material relevant to a student’s individualized goals and objectives;
  • Understand licensing and regulatory parameters relevant to telepractice as defined by AOTA and state licensing boards;
  • Structure web-based sessions that establish objectives and expectations for the session, motivates the student, and encourages participation;
  • Successfully carry out your role and responsibilities as a web-based telepractitioner providing individualized and specialized instruction according to the IEP of each student on your caseload;
  • Communicate and collaborate with school staff, session facilitators, and classroom teachers to clearly delineate the roles and responsibilities of all who are involved in the successful delivery of teletherapy sessions;
  • Access resources from EBS, AOTA and other sources to provide evidence-based and outstanding clinical intervention.
